Autumn
written by Peter J. Manosh &
illustrated by Marylise Reilly-Fajal
This book is about Autumn in Vermont and New Hampshire. It opens with: “Hot Summer nights, tempered by cool Autumn Days,” and then progresses through the changes that fall brings, till the last words appear, “Autumn rains grudgingly turn into Winter snow.”
This book is unique in the fact that the poetry can be read front to back and back to front. The illustrations are in black and white which is great for children (or me) to color in and make it their own. I really enjoyed reading this book and I believe children will love it too. Autumn is my favorite season and now I have a new favorite poem!
Captive Heart
written by Janet R. Finnamore &
illustrated by Marylise Reilly-Fajal
A refreshing retelling of the Greatest Love Story ever told. Captive Heart ~Love’s Story vividly sweeps us up into the land of kings and palaces, fair maidens and thatched roof cottages. There are dances by moonlight and promises of eternal love. But a villain, thristy for power, drives them apart and plots to destroy their world. Their love will be tested to the limit if true love is to indeed conquer all.
The greatest romance ever told is John 3:16. In Captive Heart: Love’s Story, Jan Finnamore has used the biblical account and written a fairytale romance about this King and his Bride that should grab female hearts of all ages.
It is a classic romance between the maiden, Johannah, and the noble King Joshua. At first he wins her heart, but evil Malkazar steps in, determined to turn Johannah’s heart away from the King and toward himself. At first there is wonder and joy between the King and Johannah. But a strong temptation–along with a good dose of pride–eventually causes Johannah to betray the King. Instead of the abundant life promised by Malkazar, Johannah finds herself in a bondage she cannot escape. To redeem and restore Johanna, the King’s love moves him to pay a costly ransom.
While it is a story filled with tension and drama, it is also a story to help readers understand the Kingdom of God. The drama of the story is the drama played out in our lives every day. While this would be appropriate for girls as young as nine or ten, adult women would also enjoy it.
